The Fine Line | Alice Codford
Motherhood didn't slow Alice Codford's career. It inspired an entirely new one.
A mother, writer, editor, and the founder of Luminary Mothers, Alice has built a platform dedicated to exploring modern motherhood through the lens of style, culture, creativity, and ambition. What began as a response to her own experience of becoming a mother has grown into a global editorial community celebrating women who are building businesses, leading organizations, and redefining success while raising families.
Before launching Luminary Mothers, Alice's career spanned luxury real estate, entrepreneurship, technology, and fashion journalism. From Sotheby's International Realty to founding businesses of her own, covering Fashion Weeks in Toronto and Montreal, and teaching herself to code, Alice’s path has been anything but conventional. That multidisciplinary perspective now informs the thoughtful conversations and storytelling that have become synonymous with Luminary Mothers.
Today, Alice is a champion for our unifying belief that women shouldn't have to choose between ambition and family. For this edition of The Fine Line, Alice reflects on how becoming a mother unexpectedly transformed her career, why supporting ambitious mothers requires more than inspiration alone, and what she hopes the next generation will inherit from today's evolving definition of success.
How has becoming a mother positively influenced your career?
Becoming a mother completely changed the direction of my career, in the most transformative way. After having my child, I created Luminary Mothers, a platform dedicated to sharing the stories of inspiring female founders navigating both motherhood and entrepreneurship.
Motherhood gave me a new sense of purpose. It led me to interview incredible women about their journeys building businesses while raising families, and to write thought-provoking pieces on modern motherhood. It has also become a space where I share style edits for mothers, something I’m deeply passionate about.
What started after the birth of my child has grown into something far bigger than I imagined.
Through Luminary Mothers, I’ve connected with women and brands around the world, hosted events, spoken on panels, and interviewed founders I’ve long admired. Becoming a mother didn’t just influence my career, it reshaped it in ways I never expected, opening up a path that feels both meaningful and creatively fulfilling.
How do you stay connected with your family while managing a busy career leading Luminary Mothers?
Running Luminary Mothers does give me a level of flexibility that I’m incredibly grateful for. It allows me to shape my schedule around my family when I need to. If my son isn’t in nursery one day, I can take that time to be with him, but it might mean I’m writing late into the evening, answering emails after bedtime, or taking calls with someone in New York or Australia.
Like many working mothers, it’s a constant juggle.
I try not to put too much pressure on myself or feel guilty if work spills into family time occasionally, whether that’s replying to messages or checking my phone more than I’d like on a weekend.
In many ways, Luminary Mothers was built around motherhood, so it feels right that my family is part of the journey too.
You created Luminary Mothers to fill a cultural gap - how do you think that gap has shifted over time? What are the biggest priorities to better support and celebrate motherhood, as it stands today?
When I created Luminary Mothers, it felt like there was a real cultural gap in how motherhood was being represented. There were very few spaces telling the stories of women who were both building businesses and raising families, or acknowledging that ambition and motherhood can exist side by side.
I’ve always wanted there to be more openness around the realities of modern motherhood, and greater recognition that mothers are also founders, creatives, leaders, and innovators. The narrative is becoming more layered, which is incredibly important.
But there is still progress to be made.
One of the biggest priorities now is continuing to shift the cultural narrative so that ambitious motherhood is normalized rather than treated as an exception. Alongside that, we need stronger structural support for working parents.
At its heart, that’s what Luminary Mothers aims to do: create visibility for women who are building, leading, and creating while also navigating motherhood.
